December 2011: Imp-Act on Microfinance Gateway "most read" list

Imp-Act Internal Control Guidance Note is the 5th most downloaded document on the Microfinance Gateway

Launched in May 2011, this Guidance Note emphasises the importance of integrating a social performance perspective into internal controls and audit. It offers guidance on how MFIs can systematically check compliance with their social mission in the following areas: social responsibility towards key stakeholders, client protection, quality of service provided to clients, and monitoring impact on clients’ lives. It aims to inspire MFIs to improve their operational social performance. It raises key questions to consider, and reviews emerging MFI practice to address these issues.

These Guidance Notes have emerged from an ongoing initiative led by the Imp-Act Consortium calledIntegrating social performance management into mainstream capacity building, which involves a three-part strategy:

  • Linking with experts to apply a social lens to key technical areas
  • Reviewing existing mainstream training materials to identify and prioritise gaps in training currently provided to MFIs
  • Facilitating online knowledge sharing discussions on the SPM Networkin order to add to the rich experience base of the Guidance Notes.

Each Guidance Note in the series is available to download in English, French and Spanish.
